Gauteng is the economic powerhouse of South Africa and the most vibrant, diverse city is situated in Gauteng. Johannesburg is the name.
Many tourists are afraid of visiting Johannesburg due to its negative publicity based on its crime statistics. Yes, there is crime, like in most countries, but when one is vigilant and and observant, however, they can have a fabulous time in Johannesburg. Filled with a melting pot of people from different ethnic groups, from Asian to African, South African's share in their enthusiasm for building a better country. Each area of Johannesburg is different, from Fordsburg which is filled with the smell of hot Indian curry to Soweto with the taste of Pap (Delicious meal made up of Maize Meal) lingering on your tastebuds and Sandton with its affluent restaurants, Johannesburg has a certain element to it which certainly surprises most visitors. South African History Revisited at the Apartheid MuseumThe Apartheid Museum is situated outside of Gold Reef City in Johannesburg. The Museum highlights the struggle due to blatant racism, that many Black South African’s had to go through in order to survive. The Museum is there to serve as a reminder of South Africa’s horrible past, but it’s also a step forward. The Constitutional Court is a beauty to behold. The building is situated on the Old Fort. The Old Fort, which many remember as inflicting pain on many Black South African’s has been renovated to house the South African Constitutional Court. Today, it is a reminder of the past, but also a way forward as the court is a building which many South Africans have contributed to – Black, White, Indian, Coloured, etc. The Court itself does not look as if it’s a normal court of law. It’s filled with light, colour, art, and of course benches, in which when the Judges are seated, they do not look down upon the people but look at them as they view everyone as equal. Johannesburg Entertainment – From the Sandton City Shopping Mall to the Johannesburg Zoo Johannesburg has its fair share of shopping malls. From Sandton City in the North to Trade Route Mall in the South, there’s something for every shopper. Gold Reef City is the ‘entertainment’ venue of this trip. Gold Reef City is known for its rollercoasters and many other rides. At times they even host fabulous shows at the theatre and it’s even known for hosting the Idols competition every year. Johannesburg is not even an hour’s drive away from the Lion Park, where many people have touched and played with lion’s. An experience that one should always try once in life! The Johannesburg Zoo has an incredible amount of animals situated behind its walls. Here one can see the Big Five without even stepping out of the city. The best part about the Johannesburg Zoo is that Zoo Lake is close by and it’s a must for those travelling to the city on a weekend to relax can enjoy the atmosphere as many South Africans come to the lake with their families to enjoy the paddle boats, playing on the playground area, feeding the ducks or even the great restaurant that’s situated there. 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa proves that Johannesburg is a World Class cityJohannesburg is certainly a vibrant city, which is probably why it has been chosen as a host city for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, which is something that the locals are very proud of. The stadium in Johannesburg has been named, "Soccer City". Soccer City will host many of the matches featured during the tournament, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies for the World Cup. South Africa will be showcased to the entire world during this event and everyone will be able to see the incredible vibe of the country which makes South Africans uphold the sentiment, "Proudly South African".
