Cherry blossoms and brightly coloured azaleas line the roads and gardens of the beautifully set mountain village of Haenertsburg, in the Limpopo province of South Africa.

The Magoebaskloof region makes the town perfect for hosting the annual Spring Fair which runs from 20 to 28 September, 2008. The local villagers go about setting up displays and stalls for their fresh produce, arts and crafts.

WHAT’S ON AT THE FAIR

The markets are held in the village hall and Magoebaskloof Hotel. On sale are a range of crafts, textiles, glassware, curios, soaps and wooden and wrought iron furniture. This friendly market atmosphere also features new products and gift ideas that stand out from most curios shops.

Passionate gardeners will enjoy the Wolkberg Orchid Society’s display of these exquisite, delicate plants that are also for sale during the first week of the Fair. The Cheerio Gardens originally laid out by Sheila Thompson after the Second World War are a highlight. Shaded paths wander through groves of cherry and azalea blazing with blossoms and blooms. There is also a tea garden that overlooks a pond and provides light snacks and refreshments.

WHAT TO DO IN THE VILLAGE

Not only is the village a popular place to visit for the Fair, but it is a great holiday destination all year round. It makes for an ideal weekend getaway for the family or a romantic destination for couples. There are activities for both the active and more laid back travellers.

Trout fishing can be enjoyed at an array of dams that are in the most serene settings. Surrounded by the mountains and full of different types of fish, a mere ZAR100 will allow for a full day’s fishing. The locals will also be able to recommend the best spots to go to.

Expansive hiking trails start from 1 to 2 hour circular walks or can include a five day trail. Abundant bird life and indigenous forests provide much to look at for the observant walker. Mountain bike trails can also be enjoyed by both the beginner and more advanced riders.

Cozy pubs, coffee houses, nurseries and farm stalls are all perfect for passing the hours between meals and afternoon walks. The Magoebaskloof Hotel looks down over the valley and is the ideal setting for morning tea or enjoying a gin and tonic sundowner.

THREE SPOTS WORTH A VISIT

  • The Haenertsburg cemetry. Situated at the top of the village, this grave yard is a testament to the history of the village. It also provides a panoramic view of the valley but on foggy day, it resembles something from a Stephen King novel.
  • Stanford Heights. Every small town has a best kept secret when it comes to dinning. This waffle house and nursery is definitely it. Served with fresh ice-cream, home made jam and enough maple syrup to drown in, this venue's waffles are the perfect anytime snack.
  • Iron Crown Pub. Many village pubs have a history to them, but not all can boast of royal affiliations. The Blair and Duchess of Atholl live in the village whose names are John and Peggy Murray. The pub has a great display about their history and connection to the village.

ACCOMMODATION

With events like the Spring Fair and as a popular tourist destination, Haenertsburg is overflowing with luxurious and affordable accommodation . From hotels to self-catering chalets and bed and breakfasts, every need or requirement can be catered to.
