Gold Reef City Theme Park in Johannesburg, South Africa is a thrilling experience for the entire family and an affordable holiday destination.

With adrenalin-pumping rides, tours through the old gold mines, restaurants and shows, this theme park based on one of South Africa’s biggest commodities provides hours of entertainment. The Park is created around an authentic 19th century gold mine.

Over 30 rides will keep the thrill-seekers occupied while those looking to find out more about the story of gold can take a heritage tour which includes exploring the authentic mines. With acres of space, there is plenty to do and see but everything can be done in one or two days.

Gold Reef City is one of few environments in which visitors can gain a broad understanding of Johannesburg's history, through guided tours about the role of gold in the country’s past, present and future. A prospector from Australia came to South Africa in 1886 and discovered an outcrop of unusual rocks. When he panned the rock, he discovered that it was gold.

From then on Johannesburg became the economic hub of the country. Gold Reef City looks to ensuring that this City of Gold’s heritage remains alive and enjoyed by visitors. Included in the experience are entertainment shows for the younger children and a chance to experience 4D theatre. It’s cinema unlike any other which uses special glasses and screen to give the effect that images come out at the viewer. This coupled with moving seats and spray effects puts the viewer right in the middle of the action.

Accommodation

The Gold Reef City Theme Park Hotel takes the visitor back to a bygone era at the height of Joburg’s gold rush. The hotel stays true to its Victorian inspired architecture making it truly unique. A horse and carriage are not unexpected features along with the the elegant peacocks. The Chapel makes for a perfects wedding venue, however, the distinct screaming coming from the people on the thrill rides could crush that romantic ambience.
